Largest Apprenticeship Expo in Ireland sees demand surge in construction, engineering and new technology sectors

The need for apprentices in the construction, engineering and new technology sectors is reflected in the range of exhibitors at the 6th Annual Apprenticeship Expo that took place in County Meath recently.

The Expo was attended by the Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, James Lawless who said, “Apprenticeships allow individuals to gain recognised qualifications while earning a wage and gaining practical experience. This Apprenticeship Expo provides a great opportunity for students to learn more about apprenticeship opportunities, to connect with potential employers, and to speak to education providers directly about the programmes available in the region.”

“Apprenticeships are vital for developing a skilled and capable workforce that supports our economy. They offer an alternative education and training pathway for an increasing number of occupations in the economy, building a more diverse workforce for our skills needs now and into the future," he added.

Paula McCaul, CEO of County Meath Chamber said, “This year, we can clearly see  a particularly high demand for carpenters, electricians, plumbers and software engineers.  Equally, we see growth in ICT and new technologies such as cybersecurity and robotics. All of these provide opportunities for the workforce of the future.”

Meath Chamber initiated the Expo in 2020 to connect businesses in County Meath with the talent pool which it knew was available in the region.

“More than 40,000 people commute out of Meath to their workplace every day and we wanted to be involved in connecting these people with opportunities to work within Meath.  With this at the forefront of our minds, we focused on how we could plan further ahead and link the tens of thousands second level students in the county with employers,” Paula added.

In a close partnership with Louth and Meath Education & Training Board (LMETB), the Chamber rolled out the largest and most interactive Apprenticeship Expo in the country.

There are 79 different recognised apprenticeship programmes and Philip Sheridan, Area Manager, Regional Skills & Training Centre, Dundalk, LMETB said that he is delighted to continue the valued partnership with Meath Chamber to showcase the transformative power of apprenticeships for businesses, learners and the wider economy.

“The Apprenticeship Expo has become a flagship event, bringing together employers and emerging talent while demonstrating the incredible opportunities apprenticeships offer. With thousands set to attend, this collaboration underscores our shared commitment to skills development, economic growth, and future-proofing industries across the region. Together, we are shaping a workforce that is highly skilled, adaptable and ready to meet the demands of an evolving economy,” Philip added.

Cllr Sharon Tolan, Cathaoirleach Meath County Council, said, “Shining a light on the large variety of apprenticeships available in Co. Meath and beyond, championing our young people, showcasing key employment opportunities as well as giving a platform to local businesses, and people in the education sector – the Apprenticeship Expo, for so many reasons, is such an important addition to the annual calendar”.

“The benefits of apprenticeships, both directly and indirectly, to local and national economies are immense, and I am delighted to support this tremendous event on behalf of the elected members,” she added.

Paula McCaul concluded “This is an opportunity for companies and professions to showcase what they have to offer and connect with future apprentices.”
